Description

The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog has a soft, dense outer coat with an insulating undercoat. They come in a variety of colors that include: tan, liver, black and tan, liver and white, apricot, white, black brindle, cream with black tips and black and white. The eyes are lined in black with out pink or white pigmentation. The eye color should be dark or smoky brown, blue or green eyes are acceptable. The lips are black, fine and never drooping with a scissor bite. The tail is undocked and sickle shaped. The ears are dropped . The feet are round and tight (cat's paw). The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog is balanced with a wide chest and broad shoulders and vigorous with good reach in the forequarters and good hindquarter drive. They are athletic and have done very well in agility and obedience trials. Dogs with an under bite are considered a fault. Dogs with a cork screw tail are considered a fault.

Temperament

The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog is a small dog with the temperament of a large breed dog. They are being specially bred for special needs children. While most puppies go to families in need, some puppies do get adopted out to families without a special needs child. The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog are easy to obedience train. Stable, outgoing, playful, alert, curious, very intelligent, devoted and attached to the family. Good with children. The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog is highly intelligent and sensitive and does not tolerate physical abuse or heavy handed training measures. They seem to know when to be quiet and when it's ok to be "crazy". They love to play and are quite active. They should have regular access to dog toys and chewy treats. When picked up, even while they're playing, they seem to inherently know to calm down and just cuddle. Friendly with strangers, some of them will bark at strangers such as delivery persons, however not all of them do. After smelling the person and if the owner says its ok, they are tail wagging happy. One family stated that since the puppy was so quiet they wanted some way of teaching the puppy to tell them when he needed to go outside to do its business. They came up with the original idea of teaching him to ring a bell that was placed by the door. They taught the pup to ring the bell with its paw to let them know when he had to go outside. They had only had the pup for four days; he was only 13 weeks old. These dogs are very devoted to their families and do not like to be left alone all day long without company. If you are going to be gone all day you may want to think about getting two dogs or even a cat to keep it company. Not trustworthy with non-canine pets such as hamsters and guinea pigs. They will chase rabbits, possums, skunks, armadillos, rats, etc...  These dogs are not bad diggers, but they do like to dig in fresh flower beds. Several Miniature Littlefield Sheepdogs who have had puppies have been known to go out in the yard an dig tunnels, which resemble fox dens. They will then took their puppies into the dens. These tunnels were found somewhat hidden and difficult to detect. The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog is suitable for small children and children with Autism and other disabilities. They are a very forgiving breed. The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog are a fairly new breed. After acclimating to their family, they tend to stick close to home. They are known to follow their owners from room to room. They love to sit on their owners laps.

Height, Weight

Height:  9-12 inches (23-31 cm.)
Weight: 15-25 pounds (7-10 kg.)
They are normally 15-20 pounds, however occasionally as they mature they can reach 25 pounds because of the heavier muscling across the chest and topline.

Health Problems

Occasional umbilical hernias which usually do not require surgery, nor usually cause any problems.

Living Conditions

The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog is good for apartment life as long as they were not left alone in the apartment for long periods of time. Well exercised dogs are couch potatoes indoors. They should have at least a small yard to romp and play in.

Exercise

These dogs love walks and especially love to romp and play and should have access to a save area where they can play with access to lots of toys and chewy treats.

Life Expectancy

About 12-15 years

Grooming

The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog are fairly easy to keep groomed. They require brushing at least twice a week. There are two types of cuts, their coats can be left long or a modified loin cut can be used. The modified lion cut is; leaving long - the head, top of the neck, over the shoulders and across the chest, both front and back legs - shaving under the neck to the jaw line, the entire body after the shoulders, 3 quarters of the tail leaving a tuft at the end. All dogs should have the bridge of the nose and the corner of their eyes shaved at least every 6 weeks. The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog sheds little to no hair and is good for most allergy sufferers.

Origin

The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog is a breed, which was developed for special needs children. In 1999 the development of the Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog was discussed and the slow process of creating a breed began. The club itself was officially started in March 2000. According to the Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog Club of America, it was developed from the Maltese, Bichon Frise, Shih-Tzu, Yorkshire Terrier, Lhasa Apso, Miniature Schnauzer, Poodle, and the Havanese. The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog is a combination of the best of the best and is the ultimate companion dog, made with families that have children in mind. The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog Club of America was founded and developed by Dawn Littlefield. At this time the Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog Club of America is the only organization dedicated to the ethical development and establishment of the Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog. The club is very strict with breeders to ensure that the Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog is bred for health, life longevity, physical soundness, and just as important, temperament. The happiness of the dog, puppies and families that adopt these Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog are of the utmost importance. Dawn has been rescuing dogs and other animals for over 20 years and has worked with children with special disability needs. The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog was specifically bred as a working therapy dog for the children.

The Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog was originally called the "Shichon". In December of 2005 the decision was made to change the name from Shichon to the Chacy Ranior. There was mass confusion over the name Shichon and the Shih-Tzu / Bichon Cross. This was done in order to prevent special needs children from accidentally acquiring something other than what they intended on adopting. As of late 2005 Dawn declared the breed complete, breeding true to one another. However, in 2000 Dawn had allowed other breeders to help in the development of the breed. The long distance between the breeders and the preciseness of the breeding process made it difficult for all of the breeders to stay on the same page in the breeding program. As a result Dawn's dogs and the other approved breeders breeding under the direction of Dawn Littlefield started to be noticeably different. The breeders she had approved were not able to stay up to date with dogs further in the development process and the environment the puppies were raised in was different. As a result, the dogs being bred by the approved breeders and the dogs being bred by Dawn were not the same. A decision was made to change the name of the completed lines. The name of the completed dogs are called Miniature Littlefield Sheepdogs. All of the dogs in the in-between stages of development are still called Chacy Ranior. Dawn Littlefield states, "Only breeders breeding updated lines will be allowed to use the name 'Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog'". As each of her approved breeders updates their breeding lines they will begin using the name Miniature Littlefield Sheepdog.
