These dogs are not recommended for apartment life unless you plan on taking them out daily for a jog or run alongside a bike. They are moderately active indoors and do best with acreage.
The Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is extremely energetic and tireless. It is very important that it gets daily vigorous exercise to prevent extreme indoor restlessness. This breed is more than a match for even the most active family and should not be taken on as a family pet unless it can be guaranteed plenty of vigorous exercise. It needs to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk, jog or run alongside you when you bicycle. These dogs are excellent jogging companions and love to swim and retrieve. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as instinct tells a dog the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. Teach them to enter and exit door and gateways after the humans.
About 9-15 years.
About 3 to 6 puppies
It is easy to keep the Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer in peak condition. Brush with a firm bristle brush, and dry shampoo occasionally. Bathe with mild soap only when necessary. The nails should be kept trimmed. These dogs are average shedders.
Developed by a breeder named Koloman Slimak, the Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer is a descendant of the Cesky Fousek, German Wirehaired Pointer, Weimaraner and Pudelpointer.
